*Aug 24* Sundays of Sound pop-up! Nonprofit features emerging artists

Spring was vibrant with activity at La Crescenta Presbyterian Church (LCPC), where the innovative concert series Sundays of Sound captivated enthusiastic audiences. Timeless masterworks, including Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 7 in C minor, Op. 30 No. 2, were performed alongside numerous West Coast and world premieres by living and lesser-known composers.

Founder Matthew Krell (DMA) has begun preparations for upcoming projects, including the Fall edition of Sundays of Sound (hosted on the last Sunday afternoon of each month) with a special focus on organ and keyboard concerts, a digital series titled Classical Underground featuring video projects by emerging artists performing overlooked and forgotten repertoire, and an exclusive house concert event series slated for 2026. Visit www.rhapsodia.org for announcements.

To launch the Fall Sundays of Sound series, pianist and composer Anthony (Tony) Cardella will make a triumphant return following a horrific accident in March 2025, which resulted in a broken wrist just weeks before a previously scheduled concert. Join Tony for an afternoon of solo piano music at LCPC on August 24, 2025, at 1:00 PM. After a remarkable recovery in mere months, Cardella is thrilled to present this recital in preparation for the upcoming Ibiza International Piano Competition.

This program showcases technical mastery and expressive depth, featuring a diverse repertoire that spans the intricate counterpoint of J.S. Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier, the modern intensity of Carl Vine’s Piano Sonata No. 1 (1990), the tempestuous drama of Franz Liszt’s “Orage” from Années de pèlerinage, Première année: Suisse, S. 160 No. 5, and the lyrical introspection of Liszt’s “Vallée d’Obermann” from the same collection, S. 160 No. 6, alongside selections from the hypnotic Etudes of Philip Glass (specific etudes to be announced).

Anthony Cardella serves on the faculty at Occidental College and the Colburn Conservatory while maintaining a dynamic concert schedule, frequently collaborating with visual artists and other instrumentalists. He is also in the final stages of completing a full-scholarship Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at the USC Thornton School of Music.

Admission is by donation, supporting the series’ mission to present exceptional music in an informal yet engaging setting.
